Geography Bee

In Class: Today the students will take the first round in the Geography Bee which Awtrey participates in each year. The 16 finalists will compete in the semi-final round in January. The two best students will then compete to see who wins and has a chance to compete in the regional round in March (the location to be determined).

In Class: Today we finished our lesson on the County Unit system and the advent of the One-Person, One-Vote rule that replaced it. We also looked at the two party system in America.

The County Unit System

In Class: The students read pages 349-350 and 433-434. Then they made a list of Pros and Cons of the County Unit System. They were then divided into two groups and debated each side of what they learned.

The Bill of Rights

In Class: Today the students viewed a video entitled: "Future Fright - Losing the Bill of Rights." We then discussed the video and the students had to choose two "rights" that they believe they could live without.

Principles of the U. S. Government

In Class: Today the students read pages 508-509 in the textbook. They were then given a handout explaining the separation of powers and the checks and balances system. We then discussed these ideas in class.

The Georgia Constitution

In Class: Today the students did a KWL on the Georgia Constitution (what they know, what they want to learn, and what they did learn). The students were given an outline of the GA Constitution and we discussed the basic structure of the Constitution compared to the U. S. Constitution.

Homework: The students will draft five (5) Rights for students at Awtrey School.
